The Dixie Swim Club

The Dixie Swim Club will be performed by the Tater Patch Players in Jasper, Georgia as the first show of the 2012 season. This hilarious play features 5 women who met in college as part of the swim team and they leave their families at home and gather together every year at the same beach house to reminisce and catch up on each other’s lives. Each woman is very different and have very different lifestyles but their friendships and laughter never change.

The show will run February 10 – 12, 17 - 19, and 27, 28, 2012. Showtimes are 7:30 PM except for Sunday matinees at 2 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults, $14 for seniors 60+, and $13 for students. For more information, call 706-253-2800.

Talmadge Brothers Haunted Attraction

HalloweenThe Talmadge Brothers Funeral Home and Casket Company is open for the 2011 fall season. Come take a tour of this once prosperous funeral home but beware…it is now said to be haunted by the woman who was killed there. This is a state of the art haunted attraction with incredible special effects and very believable characters.

This spooky event is open 7:30 PM to 11 PM Sundays through Thursdays and 7:30 PM to 12 Midnight on Fridays and Saturdays through October 31, 2011. Tickets are $15 per person. You may choose a VIP pass for $25 on busy nights. This speed pass allows you to go to the head of the line. Group rates are available for groups of 10 or more.

All ages are welcome however, guests under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. It is not recommended for very young children, babies, anyone with a serious medical condition or pregnant women.

2011 Georgia Marble Festival

The 31st annual Georgia Marble Festival  is coming up on October 1 and 2, 2011 in Lee Newton Park in Jasper, Georgia. This exciting weekend will be jam packed with plenty of things to do. To get things started, a parade will go through downtown Jasper starting at 10 AM on Saturday, October 1. Many local artisans set up booths to sell their homemade arts and crafts and tasty treats. There will be a kid’s area for the younger folks to be entertained. You can pick from 3 different marble quarry tour options. It is fascinating to see where the Georgia marble comes from and how the industry works. Various live bands will be performing for your entertainment throughout the weekend in the pavilion in the park starting after the parade.

The festival is open from 10:30 AM to 6 PM on Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM on Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students 6 and up, free for children 5 and under. For more information on the festival, call the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce at 706-692-5600.

Also part of the celebration is the 29th annual Georgia Marble Festival Fine Arts Competition taking place in the Pickens County Chamber of Commerce Community Room across from Lee Newton Park. This is a juried competition bringing artists from all around the region. Stop by to see some of the wonderful works of art being showcased.

For those who are more active, there is a 5K Run Road Race and 1 mile Fun Run happening early Saturday morning. This is sponsored by Jasper United Methodist Women. Proceeds will go to help fund the ministries of the Dorcas Circle. For more information on the race and to sign up, call 706-253-2100.

September Main Street Mania

It’s that time once again for a concert in downtown Jasper, Georgia at Main Street Mania. September’s featured band is a bluegrass group called the Blue Ridge Grass. Bring your lawn chairs and your dancing shoes and plan on an evening of fun on September 10, 2011 from 6 PM to 10 PM. There will be entertainment for the kids with a jumping castle and several downtown restaurants will be open for your dining pleasure.

Blue Ridge Grass is a bluegrass band out of Blue Ridge, Georgia. The band was formed in 1981 but has gone through a few changes throughout the years. The band still has two of the founding members and has been inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame. Their taste for different kinds of music such as country, gospel, and southern rock comes through making their sound a little different than the traditional bluegrass sound.

Pickens County Library Book Sale

BooksIf you are an avid reader, you won’t want to miss your chance to stock your bookshelves at this great book sale being hosted by the Friends of the Pickens County Library in Jasper, Georgia on September 9 and 10, 2011. This annual sale will be held at the Appalachian Technical College from 9 AM to 6 PM on Friday, September 9 and 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, September 10. For more information, call 706-692-5411.

Main Street Mania – August

Guitarist SilhouetteMain Street Mania will take place on Main Street in downtown Jasper, Georgia on August 13, 2011 from 6 PM to 10 PM. You can enter the BBQ cook off and enjoy an evening of live music by Hatton Still. Bring the kids out to have some fun in the jumping castle.

There is a $20 entry fee for the BBQ cook off which will consist of ribs and chicken with a trophy and cash prize. Anyone with a food service permit will be allowed to sell their food.

Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz

You won’t want to miss the Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz band in the last concert of the season at the Big Canoe Chapel’s Terraces Amphitheater in Big Canoe, Georgia on August 13, 2011 from 7:30 PM to 10 PM. Experiencing the energy of this southern Dixieland Jazz band is like stepping into the past onto Bourbon Street in New Orleans. They play music from jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and more.
